چکیده

The relatively low energy of the terahertz light (THz, 1 THz=4.14 meV) promises the non-invasive optical imaging of the biomedical objects. However, the THz light inherently suffers the optical diffraction limit and the subwavelength microstructures cannot be resolved. We propose the planar hybrid-lens comprising the multiple slits and the two-dimensional rod array for the subwavelength focusing of the THz light beyond the diffraction limit. The hybrid-lens is investigated by the finite difference time domain simulation (FDTD). The spectra of the rod array obtained by FDTD are compared with the spectra calculated by the analytical model. The subwavelength focal spot about 20 μm (λ/7.5) at the frequency 2 THz is demonstrated by FDTD. The array of the subwavelength focal spots on the opposite side of the multiple slits are generated by the interferences of the Floquet-Bloch waves which can be guided through the rod array. The hybrid-lens can function as the subwavelength focusing and the substrate simultaneously which may serve as the new tool in the high-speed imaging and sensing of the subwavelength biomedical objects by using the THz light.

Focusing of light beyond the diffraction limit of half the wavelength.

The diffraction limit sets the smallest achievable linewidth at half the wavelength. With a subwavelength plasmonic lens allowing one to reduce the diffraction via an asymmetry and to generate and squeeze the wave functions, an incident light is focused by the aperture to a single line with its width smaller than the limited value in the intermediate zone. The focused fields are capable of prop...

Magnifying perfect lens and superlens design by coordinate transformation

The coordinate transformation technique is applied to the design of perfect lenses and superlenses. In particular, anisotropic metamaterials that magnify two-dimensional planar images beyond the diffraction limit are designed by the use of oblate spheroidal coordinates. The oblate spheroidal perfect lens or superlens can naturally be used in reverse for lithography of planar subwavelength patte...

Going far beyond the near-field diffraction limit via plasmonic cavity lens with high spatial frequency spectrum off-axis illumination

For near-field imaging optics, minimum resolvable feature size is highly constrained by the near-field diffraction limit associated with the illumination light wavelength and the air distance between the imaging devices and objects. In this study, a plasmonic cavity lens composed of Ag-photoresist-Ag form incorporating high spatial frequency spectrum off-axis illumination (OAI) is proposed to r...

Broadband Ultra-Deep Sub-Diffraction-Limit Optical Focusing by Metallic Graded-Index (MGRIN) Lenses

The development of techniques for efficiently confining energy in the visible and infrared spectral regions to the deep subwavelength spatial scale with dimensions as small as a few nanometers would have great significance for scientific research and engineering practices. Such an ability to manipulate light is impossible for conventional dielectric lenses due to the diffraction limit. Here, we...

A super-oscillatory lens optical microscope for subwavelength imaging.

The past decade has seen an intensive effort to achieve optical imaging resolution beyond the diffraction limit. Apart from the Pendry-Veselago negative index superlens, implementation of which in optics faces challenges of losses and as yet unattainable fabrication finesse, other super-resolution approaches necessitate the lens either to be in the near proximity of the object or manufactured o...
